Scripture:

EZEKIEL 14:1-16:63

Literature 101

“Now this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will give you what you deserve, for you have taken your solemn vows lightly by breaking your covenant. Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you when you were young, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. Then you will remember with shame all the evil you have done. I will make your sisters, Samaria and Sodom, to be your daughters, even though they are not part of our covenant. And I will reaffirm my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD. You will remember your sins and cover your mouth in silent shame when I forgive you of all that you have done. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!”

Ezekiel 16:59-63

My Take Aways

Something Old

“And this is what the Sovereign LORD says: The people of Jerusalem are like grapevines growing among the trees of the forest. Since they are useless, I have thrown them on the fire to be burned. And I will see to it that if they escape from one fire, they will fall into another. When I turn against them, you will know that I am the LORD. And I will make the land desolate because my people have been unfaithful to me. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!”

Ezekiel 15:6-8

Something New

  • The Bible is the Word of God.
  • The Bible is alive and active.
  • The Bible is true.
  • The Bible is literature as well.
  • God could have chosen to create man in any way that He wanted.
  • He chose to create us with the capacity for language.
  • He chose to create us with a mind to reason.
  • He then speaks to us through His Word.
  • Ezekiel 16 is the longest single prophetic message in the book.
  • Metaphor: a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison.
  • Extended metaphor: the use of a single metaphor at length in a work of literature.
  • Allegory: a story that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning.
  • Synecdoche: a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa.
  • By slowing down and analyzing we can see the truth that God is telling us.
  • Man is sinful.
  • God is merciful.
  • Man has a problem.
  • God has a solution.
  • A promise is a promise.
  • God will not forsake His people.

Something To Do

When reading the Word of God, do not disconnect the wonderful mind that God gave me to see the deep truths of Scripture. He made me to be in relationship with Him, and to teach me through language!
