Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, but the people believe your lies.”

After seven days the Lord gave me a message. He said, “Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for Israel. Whenever you receive a message from me, warn people immediately.”

Ezekiel 3:16-17

• Jeremiah preached from about 628 BC to 586 BC in Jerusalem. Babylon began taking Jews as captives to Babylon as early as 605 BC, and their siege lasted 30 months before Jerusalem fell in 586 BC.
• The Archaeological Bible dates the day described in Jeremiah 28 in 593 BC.
• There were envoys in Jerusalem at that time from Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon, meeting with Zedekiah, probably to discuss rebellion against Babylon.
• The yoke Jeremiah used was the kind worn by oxen and was a symbol of political submission.
• I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so you would no longer be their slaves. I broke the yoke of slavery from your neck so you can walk with your heads held high. Leviticus 26:13
• If a fellow Hebrew sells himself or herself to be your servant and serves you for six years, in the seventh year you must set that servant free.
  Deuteronomy 15:12
• Hananiah and the leaders loved themselves and their own power, but Jeremiah risked his life and reputation to put God first and the well being of others.

We can discern the truth when we ask God for wisdom, and when we look at the fruit of others, at their character, and the way they love God and others.
