Sing a new song to the LORD, for he has done wonderful deeds.

Psalm 98:1a

My Take Aways

Something Old

Miriam didn’t use an Egyptian song. Deborah didn’t use Miriam’s song. There must be new songs on new occasions of triumph.” – Charles Spurgeon

The song of redeeming grace can never grow old, even though the same words recur…. Are not His mercies new every morning, and His faithfulness every night? Is not His love always at work spreading thy table for new meals, making thy bed for new slumber, contriving new alleviations and delights? Look out for these till meditation induces thanksgiving.” – F.B. Meyer

The psalmist answers three questions.

  • Why should I praise the Lord?
For everything… praise Him for everything… for all the wonderful deeds He has done. Psalm 98:1-3
  • How should I praise the Lord?
Break out praise… any time praise…make an instrument out of anything kind of praise. Psalm 98:4-6
  • Who should praise the Lord?
Every living thing… everything… seas, rivers, and hills.
    Psalm 98:7-9

Something New

Fun Facts from Learnreligion.com:

  • Book 1 – Psalms 1-41 – The five divisions correspond roughly to the five books of Moses. The first book is like Genesis, detailing blessing, fall, and redemption.
  • Book 2 – Psalms 42-72 – Like Exodus, this book describes ruin, and rescue by God.
  • Book 3 – Psalms 73-89 – As Leviticus covers God’s tabernacle, this book covers God’s temple.
  • Book 4 – Psalms 90-106 – Numbers tells of Israel’s relationship to other nations; this book tells of God’s kingdom compared to neighboring nations.
  • Book 5 – Psalms 107-150 – Deuteronomy was about God and his Word, and this book consists of praise for God and his Word.

Another fun fact:

There are striking parallels between the first part of Psalm 98 and Mary’s Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), which may mean that the mother of Jesus had the psalm in mind as she composed her hymn and that she rightly saw that the promises of the psalm were to be fulfilled in the spiritual victories to be achieved by Jesus Christ.” – James Boice
