Scripture:

JEREMIAH 5:20-6:30, 2 KINGS 22:3-20, 2 CHRONICLES 34:8-28

Crossroads

This is what the LORD says:“Stop at the crossroads and look around.Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it.Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply, ‘No, that’s not the road we want!’I posted watchmen over you who said,‘Listen for the sound of the alarm.’But you replied,No! We won’t pay attention!’“Therefore, listen to this, all you nations.Take note of my people’s situation.Listen, all the earth!I will bring disaster on my people. It is the fruit of their own schemes, because they refuse to listen to me.They have rejected my word.“

Jeremiah 6:16-19

My Take Aways

Something Old

In the eighteenth year of his reign, after he had purified the land and the Temple, Josiah appointed Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of Jerusalem, and Joah son of Joahaz, the royal historian, to repair the Temple of the Lord his God. They gave Hilkiah the high priest the money that had been collected by the Levites who served as gatekeepers at the Temple of God. The gifts were brought by people from Manasseh, Ephraim, and from all the remnant of Israel, as well as from all Judah, Benjamin, and the people of Jerusalem.

2 Chronicles 34:8-9

Something New

  • We know that the time is coming for judgment.
  • From the time Jeremiah gives the message from the LORD, it will be less than twenty years until King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon will invade Israel.
  • Isaiah’s message was of certain judgment.
  • Where did they go wrong?
  • They refused to remember.
  • God had given “ancient paths”, but Judah wanted “new roads.”
  • God made a covenant with Israel through Moses.
  • Obedience=blessings
  • Disobedience=judgment
  • Judah disobeyed God.
  • Judah followed after other gods.
  • Judah loved like the Canaanites.
  • Judah broke the covenant.
  • They rejected the ancient paths.
  • They would not pay attention to God’s Word.
  • They would not walk in God’s ways.
  • God promises that they will receive the “fruit of their own schemes.”
  • Yet God promises restoration, deliverance, and redemption in a new covenant.
  • We stand at a crossroads.
  • What path do we choose?
  • Psalm 119:105

Something To Do

Choose the ancient paths!
