Scripture:

2 KINGS 19:1-19, ISAIAH 37:1-20, 2 CHRONICLES 32:9-19, 2 KINGS 19:20-37, ISAIAH 37:21-38, 2 CHRONICLES 32:20-23

A Remnant

Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Here is the proof that what I say is true:“This year you will eat only what grows up by itself, and next year you will eat what springs up from that. But in the third year you will plant crops and harvest them;you will tend vineyards and eat their fruit. And you who are left in Judah, who have escaped the ravages of the siege, will put roots down in your own soiland will grow up and flourish.or a remnant of my people will spread out from Jerusalem,a group of survivors from Mount Zion. The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven’s Armieswill make this happen!

2 Kings 19:29-31

My Take Aways

Something Old

Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz, cried out in prayer to God in heaven. And the LORD sent an angel who destroyed the Assyrian army with all its commanders and officers. So Sennacherib was forced to return home in disgrace to his own land. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons killed him there with a sword.

That is how the LORD rescued Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from King Sennacherib of Assyria and from all the others who threatened them. So there was peace throughout the land. From then on King Hezekiah became highly respected among all the surrounding nations, and many gifts for the LORD arrived at Jerusalem, with valuable presents for King Hezekiah, too.

2 Chronicles 32:20-23

Something New

  • The prophets have been warning that the days for Judah are numbered.
  • King Sennacherib of Assyria had defeated the northern kingdom of Israel.
  • He now besieged Jerusalem.
  • King Hezekiah cried to the Lord for help.
  • The prophet Isaiah brought a message: there is hope.
  • A Remnant.
  • God has always preserved a remnant of faithful people.
  • Noah: Genesis 6-9
  • Joshua and Caleb: Numbers 14
  • Elijah and the 7000: 1 Kings 19
  • The remnant of the faithful ones preserved by God continues into the New Testament.
  • The few: Matthew 7:13-14
  • The ones given: John 17:6
  • Throughout all generations since Christ, there remains a faithful remnant.
  • It is the same today, for a few of the people of Israel have remained faithful because of God’s grace—his undeserved kindness in choosing them. And since it is through God’s kindness, then it is not by their good works. For in that case, God’s grace would not be what it really is—free and undeserved.
