Scripture:

PSALM 27-32

The Voice Of The Lord

Honor the LORD, you heavenly beings honor the LORD for his glory and strength. Honor the LORD for the glory of his name. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.

Psalm 29:1-2

My Take Aways

Something Old

This psalm has no other elements. It is pure praise. It does not call upon us to do anything because the psalm itself is doing the only thing it is concerned about. It is praising God.” – James Montgomery Boice

Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness
Psalm 29:1 (ESV)

Ascribe

  • To credit or assign, as to a cause or source; attribute; impute
  • To attribute or think of as belonging, as a quality or characteristic

His voice is:

  • Powerful
Having or exerting great power or force; producing great physical effects
Having great effectiveness, as a speech, speaker, description, reason, etc. having great power, authority, or influence; mighty
  • Majestic
Regal, lofty, or stately dignity; imposing character; grandeur: majesty of bearing; Supreme greatness or authority; sovereignty
  • Splits
To smash, split, or divide into parts violently; reduce to pieces or fragments
    To dissolve or annul
  • Shatters
    To break (something) into pieces
To damage, as by breaking or crushing:
To impair or destroy (health, nerves, etc.)
To weaken, destroy, or refute (ideas, opinions, etc.)
  • Strikes
To deal a blow or stroke to (a person or thing), as with the fist, a weapon, or a hammer; hit.
To inflict, deliver, or deal (a blow, stroke, attack, etc.).
To drive so as to cause impact: to strike the hands together.
    To thrust forcibly:
  • Shakes
To move or sway with short, quick, irregular vibratory movements.
To move something, or its support or container
  • Twists
To alter in shape, as by turning the ends in opposite directions, so that parts previously in the same straight line and plane are located in a spiral curve

His voice is majestic.

  • It shouts over our insecurities, enabling us to live carefree in His care.
  • It breaks every stronghold paralyzing us.
  • It strikes our pride, keeping us humble.
  • It shakes our distractions making us aware of His presence.
  • It untwists the lies we believe, setting us free to live abundantly.

The LORD

  • Rules
  • Reigns
  • Gives
  • Blesses

Yet, God’s powerful majestic voice that splits, strikes, shakes, and twists, does so very often in a whisper. Powerful doesn’t mean shout.

  • These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?”
    Job 26:14
  • He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings.
    Job 33:16
  • He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.
    Psalm 107:29
  • Then deep from the earth you will speak; from low in the dust your words will come. Your voice will whisper from the ground like a ghost conjured up from the grave.
    Isaiah 29:4
  • What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!
    Matthew 10:27

Something New

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “LORD, I am coming.”
Psalm 27:8

Oh, I love this… for several reasons.

  • David said, “My heart heard you.”
  • David knows God’s voice.
  • God said, “Talk with me.” (Implies relationship and dialogue)
  • David responds, “I’m coming.”

Something To Do

Praise Him for the great things He has done.
