Scripture:

JUDGES 16:1-18:31

Mighty to Save

Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign LORD, remember me again. O God, please strengthen me just one more time. With one blow let me pay back the Philistines for the loss of my two eyes.” Then Samson put his hands on the two center pillars that held up the temple. Pushing against them with both hands, he prayed, “Let me die with the Philistines.” And the temple crashed down on the Philistine rulers and all the people. So he killed more people when he died than he had during his entire lifetime.

Judges 16:28-30

My Take Aways

Something Old

Finally, Samson shared his secret with her. “My hair has never been cut,” he confessed, “for I was dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as anyone else.”

Judges 16:17

Something New

  • God raised up judges to deliver his people from their oppressors.
  • Samson was raised up.
  • His Nazirite vow was broken, in every way possible.
  • He drank wine.
  • He touched dead things.
  • He cut his hair.
  • External evidence of an internal problem.
  • Samson was committed to his own pleasures.
  • He was easily overcome by temptation.
  • He was easily enticed.
  • He was easily led astray.
  • In his final act, God uses Samson’s death to work deliverance for his people.
  • Samson’s story is not for us to emulate.
  • Samson’s story is not just to warn us about sinful passions.
  • Samson’s story teaches us more…he foreshadows Christ.
  • Christ is set apart to God.
  • Christ is handed over and bound by Gentile oppressors.
  • Christ willingly gave up his life.
  • Christ, through his death, brought deliverance for all who believe.
  • Chirst is mighty to save.

Something To Do

Confess when my commitment is like that of Samson, weak and falls short. Cry out to God to pursue personal holiness for His glory.
