When her son was born, she named him Samson. And the Lord blessed him as he grew up. And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he lived in Mahaneh-dan, which is located between the towns of Zorah and Eshtaol.
Judges 13:24-25
This power is Holy Spirit.
In the Old Testament Holy Spirit roamed:
- For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.
2 Chronicles 16:9 (NIV)
In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit resided:
- Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.
1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV)
Holy Spirit is
- the third person in what Christians refer to as the Trinity—the three persons of God: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Spirit. No one fully grasps this mystery of three persons in one, but we can know some things about the Holy Spirit from what Scripture tells us.
- a thinking and knowing person.
But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets.
1 Corinthians 2:10 - a gift from God of Himself to help, guide, remind, and teach us His ways.
But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
John 14:26
Holy Spirit
- Can be grieved
And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.
Ephesians 4:30 - Pleads to God on our behalf
But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.
Romans 8:26c -27 - Gives us gifts and makes decisions about them
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
1 Corinthians 12:1 (ESV)
The spirit’s power is in me, but am I allowing Holy Spirit to have power over me?
Do I allow Holy Spirit
- to help me obey God?
- to make me more like God?
- make me renown, or Him known?
No matter how much good God can bring out of even the bad things we do (And Samson did a lot of bad things), He can always bring far more good out of our obedience.
How have I missed this nugget? So it has become a custom in Israel for young Israelite women to go away for four days each year to lament the fate of Jephthah’s daughter.
Judges 11:39b-40
I’ve been born again. At my birth, I received Holy Spirit. Praise God. Let Spirit have His way in me.
