Unchecked Sin

When the period of mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her to the palace, and she became one of his wives. Then she gave birth to a son. But the Lord was displeased with what David had done.
2 Samuel 11:27

In the meantime, Saul’s daughter Michal had fallen in love with David, and Saul was delighted when he heard about it.
1 Samuel 18:20

These are the sons of David who were born in Hebron: The oldest was Amnon, whose mother was Ahinoam from Jezreel. The second was Daniel, whose mother was Abigail from Carmel. The third was Absalom, whose mother was Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur. The fourth was Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith. The fifth was Shephatiah, whose mother was Abital. The sixth was Ithream, whose mother was Eglah, David’s wife.
1 Chronicles 3:1-3

My Take Aways

Something Old

“David’s practice of adding wives showed a lack of sexual restraint and an indulgence of his passions. This corrupt seed, sown long ago, grew unchecked long enough and would bear bitter fruit.” – David Guzik

  • David demonstrated disregard for God’s plan for marriage.
  • David didn’t deal with his sin.
  • David’s sin wasn’t looking at Bathsheba, but acting on what He saw.

Often, we think if there isn’t an instant consequence, that we got away with it.

Unchecked sin grows root, and

  • strangles the Spirit’s restraint.
  • silences the Spirit’s voice.
  • substitutes our understanding for God’s truth.
  • sets us up for more sin.

James 1:14-15

Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death. (NLT)

We have no one to blame but the leering, seducing flare-up of our own lust. Lust gets pregnant, and has a baby: sin! Sin grows up to adulthood, and becomes a real killer.(MSG)

Something New

I wonder if Bathsheba ever knew what really happened to Uriah.

Something To Do

Keep my sin checked and repented.
