Scripture:

2 SAMUEL 7:1-17, 1 CHRONICLES 17:1-15, 2 SAMUEL 7:18-29, 1 CHRONICLES 17:16-27, 2 SAMUEL 8:1-14, 1 CHRONICLES 18:1-13, PSALM 60

A House for My Name

“Now go and say to my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth! And I will provide a homeland for my people Israel, planting them in a secure place where they will never be disturbed. Evil nations won’t oppress them as they’ve done in the past, starting from the time I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. And I will defeat all your enemies.“‘Furthermore, I declare that the LORD will build a house for you—a dynasty of kings! For when you die and join your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, one of your sons, and I will make his kingdom strong. He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for me. And I will secure his throne forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my favor from him as I took it from the one who ruled before you. I will confirm him as king over my house and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.’”

1 Chronicles 17:7-14

My Take Aways

Something Old

Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and prayed, “Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? “

2 Samuel 7:18

Something New

  • David is now the established king of Israel.
  • From his balcony, David can see the Tabernacle that serves as God’s house.
  • David made a commitment to build a beautiful new house for God.
  • God reminded David how he got to the palace.
  • “I took you from the pasture.”
  • “I have been with you.”
  • “I have destroyed all of your enemies before you.”
  • From the pasture to the palace, God was directing David’s steps.
  • God reminded David of His past faithfulness.
  • God made a promise.
  • God promises to build David an eternal house.
  • The first fulfillment of this is through Solomon.
  • Solomon will do foolish things, but God will keep His promise.
  • The promise points through Solomon to another king, Jesus.
  • The temple would be the body of Jesus, and by extension the Church.
  • The real son of David would build the real temple of God.
  • God would build His own house.
  • He would become the house He promised to build.
  • God would be the fulfillment of His own promise.

Something To Do

Remember that God has directed my steps. He brought me to this place for His purpose. Do not give up!
