One day Korah son of Izhar, a descendant of Kohath son of Levi, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, from the tribe of Reuben. They incited a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 other leaders of the community, all prominent members of the assembly.
Numbers 16:1-2
Envy is dangerous to our faith, our witness, and influence. In Korah’s case, it led to rebellion against Israel’s leaders which was ultimately rebellion against God.
The Bible says it can cause health problems, unrest, and confusion. And that we should get rid of it.
- A calm and undisturbed mind and heart are the life and health of the body, but envy, jealousy, and wrath are like rottenness of the bones.
Proverbs 14:30 (AMPC) - For wherever there is jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry and selfish ambition), there will also be confusion (unrest, disharmony, rebellion) and all sorts of evil and vile practices.
James 3:16 (AMPC) - Let us not become vainglorious and self-conceited, competitive and challenging and provoking and irritating to one another, envying and being jealous of one another.
Galatians 5:26 (AMPC) - So be done with every trace of wickedness (depravity, malignity) and all deceit and insincerity (pretense, hypocrisy) and grudges (envy, jealousy) and slander and evil speaking of every kind.
1 Peter 2:1 (AMPC)
How do we get rid of envy?
- Focus on spiritual things
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Romans 8:5 (ESV) - Focus on God
You keep Him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because He trusts in you.
Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)
If we do these two things, we will be too busy to be envious or discontent.
- Even if I think I have a skill set more suited for the position, doesn’t mean I should have the position.
- Even if I think the person isn’t doing a good job, don’t gather a gang to take over the position.
Instead
- Follow the leadership that is in place.
- Pray for the leadership that is in place.
- Encourage the leadership that is in place.
- Help the leadership that is in place.
- Obey God’s leading regarding your position in the place.
And remember, God sees it all, and He’s got it.
- He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars.
Daniel 2:21
I never noticed the Israelites referred to Egypt as a land flowing with milk and honey.
Isn’t it enough that you brought us out of Egypt, a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us here in this wilderness, and that you now treat us like your subjects?
Numbers 16:13
Tend to my own-self and let God take care of the rest.
