Scripture:

JOSHUA 10:1-12:6

Victory

So Joshua took control of the entire land, just as the LORD had instructed Moses. He gave it to the people of Israel as their special possession, dividing the land among the tribes. So the land finally had rest from war.
Joshua 11:23

My Take Aways

Something Old

On the day the Lord gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the LORD in front of all the people of Israel. He said, “Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies.
Joshua 10: 12-13a

Something New

  • Joshua’s job was to lead the people across the Jordan River into Canaan and take back the land God promised Abraham.
  • The time of the Conquest is completed.
  • It has taken seven years.
  • It is time for the land to be settled by the tribes.
  • Every part of the Bible points towards Jesus, even the conquest of Canaan.

  • Jesus did come to set things right by blood, His own.
  • The Prince of Peace suffered a violent death on the behalf of the very people who were murdering Him.
  • In Christ, God himself suffered violence so that violence might be ended forever.
  • Joshua was to drive evil out of the land.
  • Jesus came to drive evil out of His creation.
  • In Joshua, God was triumphant in Canaan despite the death and violence of battle.
  • In Jesus, God triumphed over death itself because of the violence he endured.
  • Joshua’s victory came at the expense of his enemy’s blood.
  • Jesus’s victory for his enemies came through the shedding of his own blood.
  • Victory In Jesus – Travis Cottrell lyrics

Something To Do

Know that the God of the Old Testament is the God of the New Testament. The judgment in the Old Testament, He takes on Himself in the New Testament…on our behalf. As we continue to read through hard texts…remember who He is.
