So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the LORD. Then Joshua made a peace treaty with them and guaranteed their safety, and the leaders of the community ratified their agreement with a binding oath.
Joshua 9:14-15

Joshua then read to them all the blessings and curses Moses had written in the Book of Instruction. Every word of every command that Moses had ever given was read to the entire assembly of Israel, including the women and children and the foreigners who lived among them.
Joshua 8:34-35

• God has promised to bless all nations on the earth through Israel.
• Israel has now entered the Promised Land.
• They will now fulfill the plan to possess the land that the LORD has given them and drive out the inhabitants.
• People have heard…and they have a plan.
• The Gibeonites have come…over the river and through the woods…or so they say.
• They knew that Israel had a purpose.
• They knew what God had done on their behalf.
• They knew that Israel would destroy them.
• They had to find a way to trick them into a treaty.
• It worked, because Israel did not consult God.
• Israel thought they didn’t need to ask God, this was an easy decision.
• They could do this on their own.
• Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
