Scripture:

DEUTERONOMY 1:1-3:20

Iniquity of the Amorites

“Then, just as the LORD our God commanded us, we left Mount Sinai and traveled through the great and terrifying wilderness, as you yourselves remember, and headed toward the hill country of the Amorites. When we arrived at Kadesh-barnea, I said to you, ‘You have now reached the hill country of the Amorites that the LORD our God is giving us. Look! He has placed the land in front of you. Go and occupy it as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Don’t be afraid! Don’t be discouraged!’

“But you all came to me and said, ‘First, let’s send out scouts to explore the land for us. They will advise us on the best route to take and which towns we should enter.’

“This seemed like a good idea to me, so I chose twelve scouts, one from each of your tribes. They headed for the hill country and came to the valley of Eshcol and explored it. They picked some of its fruit and brought it back to us. And they reported, ‘The land the LORD our God has given us is indeed a good land.’
Deuteronomy 1:19-25

My Take Aways

Something Old

But forty years after the Israelites left Egypt, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses addressed the people of Israel, telling them everything the LORD had commanded him to say.
Deuteronomy 1:3

Something New

  • Time to connect the dots!
  • As Israel prepares to enter the Promised Land, God will use them to judge sin.
  • In Genesis 15, God confirms His unconditional covenant with Abram.
  • God also gives Abram a glimpse into future events.
  • Genesis 15:13-16
  • Abram would have many descendants.
  • Abram’s descendants would be taken captive and treated harshly.
  • After four hundred years, Abram’s descendants would return to Canaan.
  • Their return would be at the time of God’s judgment on the Amorites in Canaan.
  • Moses leads the people to the borders.
  • Joshua will lead the people into the land and conquer it.
  • The conquest took place only after the sin of the Canaanites had reached its full measure.
  • The Amorites and other Canaanites were wicked.
  • Leviticus 18:25
  • Their sin would be punished.
  • Romans 3:23
  • 2 Peter 3:9
  • Luke 13:24-27

Something To Do

Be amazed that God shows love, mercy, and patience with sinful man.
