Scripture:

EXODUS 20:1-22:15

The Cost of Having Other Gods

“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.“
Exodus 20:4

My Take Aways

Something Old

  • Failure to obey this commandment is called idolatry.
    We are to flee idolatry
So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols.
    1 Corinthians 10:14
  • Idolatry is a work of the flesh
When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division,
    Galatians 5:19-20

God has not ever, will He ever, share affection with any other god.

  • How are my affections divided?
  • Who or what comes before God?

What does idolatry cost?

  • Miss out on the blessings of God
“‘Cursed be the man who makes a carved or cast metal image, an abomination to the Lord, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.'”
    Deuteronomy 27:15 (ESV)
  • We forsake steadfast love.
Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.
    Jonah 2:8 (ESV)
  • Our sorrows are multiplied?
    The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiple;
    Psalm 16:4a  (ESV)
  • Our senses our dulled.
The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them.
    Psalm 135:15-18 (ESV)

Something New

I always wondered why they had to use uncut stones.

If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.
Exodus 20:25

If an altar were made of stone, it was possible or even likely that attention would be drawn, and glory would be given to the stone carver. God, at His altar, wanted to share glory with no man – the beauty and attractiveness would be found only in the provision of God, not in any fleshly display. Enduringword.com

Something To Do

My idols are not worth the cost. Get rid of them.
