So Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel listed all the Levites by their clans and families. All the men between thirty and fifty years of age who were eligible for service in the Tabernacle and for its transportation numbered 8,580. When their names were recorded, as the Lord had commanded through Moses, each man was assigned his task and told what to carry.And so the registration was completed, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Numbers 4:46-49

Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Record the names of the members of the clans and families of the Kohathite division of the tribe of Levi. List all the men between the ages of thirty and fifty who are eligible to serve in the Tabernacle.
Numbers 4:1-3

• Numbers records two census counts of the people, one at the beginning and one at the end.
• Moses conducts two censuses of the tribe of Levi.
• The first census was a count of every male a month old or more.
• The tribe of Levi was the smallest.
• God chose the Levites as redemption for the first-born sons of all of Israel.
• The first-born sons were God’s because He spared them when He killed all of the first-born in Egypt during the first Passover.
• The Levites are closer in proximity to the presence of God than anyone.
• This privilege of the first-born comes with responsibility.
• The proximity to God is good.
• The proximity to God means obedience is crucial.
• The Levites are God’s chosen ones who will represent God’s blessing and presence to the other tribes.

Many families made up the tribe of Levi. Each was assigned a specific job to do in service to the Lord, but each was dependent upon the other to serve and worship. The Church is made up of many. We each are dependent upon one another to serve and worship the Lord as His Church. Remember that the Church is God’s gift to us, and we are gifts to each other.
