Scripture:

EXODUS 4:18-7:13

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, LORD, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me?
Exodus 5:22

My Take Aways

Something Old

Just because we obey God it doesn’t mean things will automatically go smoothly.

Obedience often

  • invites trouble and more conflict with others
The Israelites were oppressed to a greater degree and were angry with Moses. (Exodus 5:6-23)

Moses took his frustration to God.

  • Gives opportunities for conversations with God (Exodus 5:22-23; 6:30)
  • Tests our resolve to continue in obedience, or adjust our commitment to God
God continues to give Moses instructions, and even after intense conversations, Moses obeys God. (Exodus 6:1)
  • Causes us to doubt, and become critical of ourselves (Exodus 6:30)

Please despite all of Moses’ protesting and arguing, God continues to speak and Moses continues to obey.

Progression and regression is the dance of building confident faith.

Something New

Then Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Let me return to my own people in Egypt to see if any of them are still alive.”  Jethro said, “Go, and I wish you well.”
Exodus 4:18

I can’t imagine returning to the place of one of my greatest sins. Moses demonstrated such confident faith when obeyed God.

Something To Do

Don’t be discouraged when my faith takes me two steps forward and one step back.

P.S.S.
Was God going to kill Moses?
