Scripture:

NUMBERS 8:1-9:14, LEVITICUS 1:1-3:17

Purpose

The Lord called to Moses from the Tabernacle and said to him, “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. When you present an animal as an offering to the Lord, you may take it from your herd of cattle or your flock of sheep and goats.”
Leviticus 1:1-2

My Take Aways

Something Old

A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai. In the first month of that year he said, “Tell the Israelites to celebrate the Passover at the prescribed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. Be sure to follow all my decrees and regulations concerning this celebration.”
Numbers 9:1-3

Something New

  • Genesis and Exodus are historical narratives.
  • The next book in the books of Moses is not.
  • Leviticus is full of descriptions of laws and rituals.
  • Leviticus emphasizes the holiness of God, and the sinfulness of man.
  • The people of Israel are preparing to be the nation of Israel.
  • The laws and rituals call Israel to be holy like God is holy.
  • They set Israel apart from the nations surrounding them.
  • They constantly remind Israel that they are the covenant people of God.
  • They point to the Messiah who would come and fulfill all of the Law.
  • The book of Leviticus might take a little more work to understand.
  • God has a plan to make a way for sinful people to live in His presence.
  • “No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. And they will see his face.”
    Revelation 22:3-4a

Something To Do

Read Leviticus with its purpose in mind…and be overwhelmed by the goodness of God!
