This letter is from John to the seven churches in the province of Asia.
Revelation 1:4a
Which church am I most like?
Ephesus
- Remembered for working hard, persevering, and not tolerating evil people and false prophets, yet rebuked for forgetting our first love.
Smyrna
- Remembered for withstanding poverty, affliction, slander, suffering for your faith and not rebuked.
Pergamum
- Remembered for being faithful to Christ and His Name under threat of death, yet rebuked for holding false teaching, participating in idolatry, and sexual immorality.
Thyatira
- Remembered for demonstrating love, faith, service, and endurance, yet rebuked for tolerating false prophets, participating in idolatry, and sexual immorality.
Sardis
- Remembered for having a faithful remnant, yet having a fake reputation of having an “alive” faith and not rebuked.
Philadelphia
- Remembered enduring with limited strength, keeping Christ’s Word, and remaining faithful to Name of Jesus Christ and not rebuked.
Laodica
- Remembered for nothing positive about your faith, and rebuked for being lukewarm, took pride in being wealthy enough to take care of yourself and needing nothing from Jesus.
Honestly, I can see myself in a bit of several churches. I have some work to do.
I think it is so interesting how many New Testament authors declare themselves slaves to Christ.
This letter is from Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and a brother of James.
Jude 1:1
Repent when I’m rebuked, and allow the Holy Spirit to work in me things that John would be pleased to write in a letter about me.
