In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.
James 3:5
Wise words from Wiersbe (With the Word: The Chapter By Chapter Handbook.)
Before you say anything, ask yourself these questions
- Who is in control? (James 3:1-4)
When you tongue is under God’s control (Submission to Spirit’s activity in your life.) then you will pause and ponder your words carefully before you say them.
- What will the consequences be? (James 3:5-12)
Will your words start a fire? What is the possible damage? You can put the words back in your mouth after they have already come out of your mouth.
- What are my motives? (James 3:13-18)
Do you harbor bitterness, envy, lust, anger, jealousy or revenge? Are you trying to make peace? Is your heart right with God?
Psalm 141:3
- Take control of what I say, O LORD, and guard my lips.
- Lord, help me control what I say. Don’t let me say anything bad. (ERV)
Ephesians 4:29
- Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
- When you talk, don’t say anything bad. But say the good things that people need—whatever will help them grow stronger. Then what you say will be a blessing to those who hear you. (ERV)
A woman once said to John Wesley, “I think my talent from God is to speak my mind.” Wesley replied, “I don’t think God would mind if you buried that talent.”
Wow. Just wow.
Put the right things in my mind, so the right things will come out of my mouth. Submit to Spirit’s work in my life. Yield to His nudges so that I will not hurt others or stir up trouble with my words.
