Scripture:

PHILEMON 1:1-25, PHILIPPIANS 1:1-2:11

Making a Gentle Appeal

I am writing to Philemon, our beloved co-worker,  and to our sister Apphia, and to our fellow soldier Archippus, and to the church that meets in your house.

Philemon 1:1a-2

My Take Aways

Something Old

No part of the New Testament more clearly demonstrates integrated Christian thinking and living. It offers a blend, utterly characteristic of Paul, of love, wisdom, humour, gentleness, tact, and above all Christian and human maturity.” – N.T. Wright

Appeal

  • An earnest or urgent request, entreaty, or supplication.

A loving appeal

  • Affirm how you feel about the person
(Even if you don’t think highly of the person ask God to give you something affirming to say)
I always thank my God when I pray for you, Philemon.
Philemon 1:4 (See also verses 5-7)
  • Start with kind and soft words.
A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.
    Proverbs 15:1
  • Calmly go over the details of the situation
There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
    Proverbs 12:18 (ESV)
  • Offer possible solutions
    See Philemon 1:12-14

When making an appeal, be prepared for it to be rejected.

Something New

And to our sister Apphia, and to our fellow soldier Archippus, and to the church that meets in your house.
Philemon 1:2

It is likely Apphia was Philemon’s wife and Archippus was his son.

Something To Do

Appeal gently and rightly, with love.
