Scripture:

2 CORINTHIANS 6:14-10:18

The Sorrow God Wants Us To Experience

Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right.

2 Corinthians 7:11

My Take Aways

Something Old

Who am I teamed up with?

Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?

2 Corinthians 6:14

Something New

In sin, the pleasure passeth, the sorrow remaineth; but in repentance, the sorrow passeth, the pleasure abideth forever. God soon poureth the oil of gladness into broken hearts.” – John Trapp

It’s a grief that makes us keenly aware of sin, with an earnestness to clear our conscious.

Holy Spirit’s intent isn’t to hurt us (Neither was it Paul’s intent to hurt them), but to create an awareness of our sin, that lead to repentance of the sin. Sometimes we have to hear the hard stuff about ourselves in order to open up to a transformation that Spirit wants to do in our lives.

The pain of the awareness of our sin should

  • cause us to repent.
  • open our heart to transformation.
  • make us grateful for grace.
  • produce joy for the experience.

What is godly sorrow? (Gotquestions.org)

There are two responses:

  • Submit the pain to the Spirit for confirmation, then repent and allow His work in our lives to correct the sin.
  • Blame the source, refuse to engage the Spirit, and remain the same.

Something To Do

Experience the godly sorrow necessary to become what Christ wants me to become… a reflection of His image.
