Scripture:

MARK 15:2-5, MATTHEW 27:11-14, LUKE 23:1-12, JOHN 18:28-40, MARK 15:6-15, MATTHEW 27:15-26, LUKE 23:13-25, JOHN 19:1-16, MARK 15:16-20, MATTHEW 27:27-31

Time

Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law—the entire high council—met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.

Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

Jesus replied, “You have said it.”

Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes, and Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?” But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.
Mark 15:1-5

My Take Aways

Something Old

So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.

Mark 15:15

Something New

  • Mark’s narrative of the trial of Jesus by Pilate was not a detailed report, but simple telling of the events of the night.
  • Jesus was prosecuted under the Jewish law and condemned for blasphemy by the Sanhedrin.
  • He was tried before Pilate under Roman law for high treason.
  • The Sanhedrin needed to bring Jesus to Pilate as soon after dawn as possible.
  • The working day of a Roman official began in the earliest hours of daylight.
  • Legal trials in the Roman forum were usually held shortly after sunrise.
  • The chief priests were working on a time schedule to accomplish their plan.
  • God is not limited by the physical laws and dimensions that govern our world.
  • Isaiah 57:15
  • The marking of time is irrelevant to God because He exists outside of “the box” that He has made. 2 Peter 3:8
  • God sees all of eternity’s past and eternity’s future.
  • Time is duration. Clocks mark change that indicates the passage of time.
  • God lives outside the bounds of time as we know it.
  • 2 Timothy 1:9; Titus 1:2; Ephesians 1:4; 1 Peter 1:20
  • God is timeless, and eternal…yet is in time with us right now.
  • He is not only transcendent, he is also immanent.
  • Galatians 4:4-5

Something To Do

Know that God is always right on time. We are on His timetable, He is not on ours.
