If you want to be my disciple…
Luke 14:26a
What is a disciple?
Who cannot be a disciple?
- One who doesn’t hate his mother, father and brother.
“It is only in a comparative sense, and not literally, that the term can possibly be used; and to make this very clear, Christ said that we are to hate our own life.” – Charles Spurgeon
- One who will not to take up and carry his/her cross.
“The general idea that these words of Jesus about bearing the cross refer to passive submission to all kinds of afflictions, like disappointments, pain, sickness and grief that come upon man in life, is totally wrong… only a person who for the sake of His service surrenders all self-seeking and abandons all striving after his own interests can be His disciple.” – Johannes Geldenhuys
Sit down and count the cost.
- Can you afford to be a disciple?
- Can you afford not to be a disciple?
“It is possible to be a follower of Jesus without being a disciple.” – William Barclay
Am I a follower of Jesus or a disciple of Jesus?
Then he said to them, “You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.
Luke 16:15
It is so clear, embracing what the world embraces does not please God.
- What does the world embrace?
- Where do the lines cross for me?
I never want to honor anything that God detests. Cleanse me Lord.
Count the cost before I make the commitment to Christ about anything. He would rather I never make a vow, than to make it and not keep it.
