Scripture:

GENESIS 47:28-50:26

Ending the Beginning

Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath, and he said, “When God comes to help you and lead you back, you must take my bones with you.” So Joseph died at the age of 110. The Egyptians embalmed him, and his body was placed in a coffin in Egypt.
Genesis 50:25-26

My Take Aways

Something Old

But Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you? You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.
Genesis 50:19-20

Something New

  • The beginning of the universe.
  • The beginning of the nations of the world.
  • The beginning of the nation of Israel.
  • The beginning of the outworking in real space and time of God’s plan of redemption.
  • God loved man.
  • He gave them Eden to live and work in their worship and walk with Him.
  • The account of creation is followed by the beginning of sin and death.
  • A book that begins with creation in a garden in Eden ends in a coffin in Egypt.
  • God’s commanded will had been defied.
  • God’s decreed will is still at work.
  • The coffin stood as a promise of the next chapter.
  • For over 400 years, Joseph’s sarcophagus stood waiting in Goshen.
  • Joseph knew God would be faithful.
  • The promised land would come.
  • The promised nation would come.
  • Israel would take Joseph home with them.
  • The coffin in Genesis reminds us that God’s plan is not done.
  • Where was Joseph buried?

Something To Do

A coffin is not the end of the story…then or now.
