Scripture:

GENESIS 30:25-31:55

Fingerprints

Then Jacob took some fresh branches from poplar, almond, and plane trees and peeled off strips of bark, making white streaks on them. Then he placed these peeled branches in the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink, for that was where they mated. And when they mated in front of the white-streaked branches, they gave birth to young that were streaked, speckled, and spotted. Jacob separated those lambs from Laban’s flock. And at mating time he turned the flock to face Laban’s animals that were streaked or black. This is how he built his own flock instead of increasing Laban’s.

Whenever the stronger females were ready to mate, Jacob would place the peeled branches in the watering troughs in front of them. Then they would mate in front of the branches. But he didn’t do this with the weaker ones, so the weaker lambs belonged to Laban, and the stronger ones were Jacob’s. As a result, Jacob became very wealthy, with large flocks of sheep and goats, female and male servants, and many camels and donkeys.
Genesis 30:37-43

My Take Aways

Something Old

When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he enabled her to have children, but Rachel could not conceive. So Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, “The Lord has noticed my misery, and now my husband will love me.”
Genesis 29:31-32

Something New

  • Remember the Hero of the Story!
  • This section of Genesis can be seen as confusing, and very odd!
  • Many use this passage to make fun of the Bible.
  • The truth is that you can’t “out-think” God.
  • Science is just catching up to Genesis.
  • God wanted this recorded, as confusing as it seems.
  • Jacob wants to leave Laban and return home.
  • God has blessed Laban through Jacob.
  • Jacob put the peeled sticks in the watering troughs.
  • The flocks bred near the troughs.
  • Jacob needed to have the animals with genetic traits for stripes, spots, and mottling to outbreed the solid color coated flocks.
  • Knowledge of animal feeding and mating behavior.
  • Medicine to keep his livestock healthier.
  • Understanding of genetic traits.
  • Thankfully, Jacob obeyed God.
  • Genesis 31:10-12
  • Jacob did not cheat Laban.
  • God was working and helping Jacob.
  • Botanical and pharmacology studies are looking into the same ideas now.
  • Scripture teaches sound science.
  • “Jacob’s Sheep” are back home after a thousand years

Something To Do

Remember that God is the author of everything in life, if we are looking through a biblical lens we will see His fingerprints everywhere.
