Scripture:

EZRA 2:1-4:5, 1 CHRONICLES 3:19-24

An Attitude Toward the Enemy

But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other leaders of Israel replied, “You may have no part in this work. We alone will build the Temple for the LORD, the God of Israel, just as King Cyrus of Persia commanded us.”
Ezra 4:3

My Takeaways

Something Old

“From this point onwards right to the end of Nehemiah there is conflict. Nothing that is attempted for God will now go unchallenged, and scarcely a tactic be unexplored by the opposition.” – Derek Kidner

Common tactics

  • Fear
  • Intimidation
  • Interference

All work requires

  • Obedience
  • Sacrifice
  • Steadfastness

And attitude:

  • LORD, the God of Israel, just as King Cyrus of Persia commanded us.
    Ezra 4:3
  • Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
    James 4:7 (ESV)

About our enemy

  • Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
    1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)
  • And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
    2 Corinthians 11:14 (ESV)

Something New

They searched for their names in the genealogical records, but they were not found, so they were disqualified from serving as priests.
Ezra 2:62

They were not permanently removed. The consulted genealogy records as well as the Urim and Thummim—the sacred lots.

Something To Do

Don’t be surprised when the enemy tries to mess up my yes.
