Importunate Prayer

I went on praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people, pleading with the Lord my God for Jerusalem, his holy mountain.
Daniel 9:20

My Takeaways

Something Old

  • Importunate: urgent or persistent in solicitation, sometimes annoyingly so
  • Pertinacious: holding tenaciously to a purpose, course of action, or opinion; resolute.

“Cold prayers ask God to deny them: only prayers will be replied to. When the Church of God cannot take ‘No’ for an answer, she shall not have ‘No’ for an answer. When a pleading soul must have it; when the Spirit of God works mightily in him so that he cannot let the angel go without a blessing, the angel shall not go till he has given the blessing to such a pleading one. Brethren, if there be only one among us that can pray as Daniel did, with intensity, the blessing will come.” – Charles Spurgeon

Examples of persistent people

Pray for Israel

  • Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! “May they be secure who love you!”
    Psalm 122:6 (ESV)

Pray for one another:

  • Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
    James 5:16 (ESV)

For His Lasting Honor

  • O Lord our God, you brought lasting honor to your name by rescuing your people from Egypt in a great display of power. But we have sinned and are full of wickedness. In view of all your faithful mercies, Lord, please turn your furious anger away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. All the neighboring nations mock Jerusalem and your people because of our sins and the sins of our ancestors.”
    Daniel 9:15-16

For His Name Sake

  • O our God, hear your servant’s prayer! Listen as I plead. For your own sake, Lord, smile again on your desolate sanctuary.”
    Daniel 9:17

Because of His Mercy

  • O my God, lean down and listen to me. Open your eyes and see our despair. See how your city—the city that bears your name—lies in ruins. We make this plea, not because we deserve help, but because of your mercy.”
    Daniel 9:18

For His People and the city that bears His Name

  • O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, listen and act! For your own sake, do not delay, O my God, for your people and your city bear your name.”
    Daniel 9:19

Because of our sin

  • I went on praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people, pleading with the Lord my God for Jerusalem, his holy mountain.
    Daniel 9:20

Something New

Daniel was well versed in the law. He knew the punishment coming was a direct result of the people’s failure to obey God.

You have kept your word and done to us and our rulers exactly as you warned. Never has there been such a disaster as happened in Jerusalem. Every curse written against us in the Law of Moses has come true.
Daniel 9:12-13a

Something To Do

Pray. Pray. Pray.
