I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living in my palace in comfort and prosperity.
Daniel 4:4
- Resting in the world’s comfort and prosperity will make me restless and rob me of peace.
- Resting in the Lord’s comfort and prosperity will make me restless and rob me of peace.
The Christian was saved for more than rest.
The Lord’s comfort and prosperity (not necessarily wealth) should bring rest from the:
- Anxiety and stresses of this world
- Uncertainty of our future
- Guesswork of making decisions
Resting in what Christ has done for us is, just as wrong as resting in what the world has offered. Christians shouldn’t be saved, be blessed, and rest in it.
We should be saved, blessed, and stirred.
Stirred to:
- Share the love of Christ with everyone.
- Serve others.
- Serve the church.
- Sanctification and Christ’s likeness.
- Say prayers for the lost and those who have fallen away from the faith.
- Spread the good news of the gospel.
- Speak about the reality of eternity apart from Christ.
The Christian was saved for more than salvation; we were saved to advance the gospel and grow heaven.
Philippians 2:12
- Dearest friends, when I was there with you, you were always so careful to follow my instructions. And now that I am away you must be even more careful to do the good things that result from being saved, obeying God with deep reverence, shrinking back from all that might displease him. (TLB)
- Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
(ESV)
Upon hearing this, Daniel (also known as Belteshazzar) was overcome for a time, frightened by the meaning of the dream.
Daniel 4:19a
Daniel was frightened by the dream. Sometimes things I receive from the Lord, frighten me.
Don’t rest in my salvation and wait for heaven. Work out my salvation with fear and trembling.
