But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say,…”Luke 4:4aJesus replied, “The Scriptures say,…”Luke 4:8aJesus responded, “The Scriptures also say,…”
Luke 4:12a
The wilderness may not be fun, or easy, but it can be a classroom.
Often, it’s perceived that giving in to the temptation will bring relief; it doesn’t.
Jesus won the battle in wilderness because He recognized the method of attack, and used the correct weapon.
We will win every time if we fight like Jesus.
Recognize the method/the temptation:
1 John 2:16
- For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. (NIV)
- For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. (NLT)
- Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity. (MSG)
Defeat the temptation… use the correct weapon and use is correctly.
(The weapon is useless unless we know it.)
- For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:12
- Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Ephesians 6:17b
- For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
Hebrews 4:12
Neither the method of attack or the mode of defense of changed.
P.S. The enemy will come back.
When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.
Luke 4:13
For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.
Matthew 4:2
I love that we see the humanness of God.
Know my weapon. Fight like Jesus.
