Nehemiah 8:17
- Confession: tells God, “I know I sinned.” (words)
- Repentance: tells God, “I know I sinned, and I’m gonna do something about it.” (words and actions)

True repentance:
- Involves a sense of awareness of one’s own guilt, sinfulness, and helplessness
(Psalm 51:4–10).
But deal well with me, O Sovereign LORD, for the sake of your own reputation! Rescue me because you are so faithful and good. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is full of pain.
Psalm 109:21–22
- Apprehends or takes hold of God’s mercy in Jesus Christ (Psalm 130:4).
Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.
Psalm 51:1
- Means a change of attitude and action regarding sin. Hatred of sin turns the repentant person away from his or her sin to God (Psalm 119:128).
For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.
2 Corinthians 7:10
- Results in a radical and persistent pursuit of holy living, walking with God in obedience to His commands (2 Timothy 2:19–22).
For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
