Scripture:

MATTHEW 8:5-13, LUKE 7:1-17, MATTHEW 11:1-19, LUKE 7:18-35, MATTHEW 11:20-30, LUKE 7:36-50

My Yoke Is Easy

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30

My Takeaways

Something Old

John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”
Matthew 11:2-3

Something New

  • Jesus is not speaking of physical burdens.
  • Jesus is speaking of the “yoke of the Pharisees.”
  • The heavy burden of the works-based religion that the Pharisees laid on the people is what Jesus is offering to relieve.
  • Between the time of the Old Testament and the New Testament the Pharisees had added many laws…over 600 regulations regarding working on the Sabbath.
  • Matthew 22:36
  • No amount of law keeping can bridge the gap between man and God.
  • Romans 3:20
  • Jesus carries the burden that we were meant to carry.
  • His obedience is imputed to us through faith…just as His righteousness was exchanged for our sin at the cross. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Something To Do

May I realize that the yoke is easy because He took the burden for me…and enabled me to live an abundant life.
