Upper Room Discourse

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.” “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”
John 14:1-7

My Takeaways

Something Old

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
John 15:9-11 (ESV)

Something New

  • The Upper Room Discourse is the block of teaching found only in the gospel of John, chapters 13-17.
  • Jesus washes the feet of His disciples.
  • He tells them of His betrayal, and Peter’s denial.
  • The teachings begin in chapter 14.
  • Jesus’ last words to His disciples are meant to comfort them and prepare them for what is to come.
  • They leave the Upper Room at the end of chapter 14, and begin the walk to the Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives.
  • Jesus teaches as they walk and stop along the way.
  • John 17 records the prayer known as “Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer”, as He prays for unity and protection for the disciples, and for the believers yet to come.
  • The Upper Room Discourse reveals the heart of Jesus as He knows what His disciples will need in the days to come.
  • The love of the Father is shown through the Son.
  • He still loves the same.
  • Passion – How He Loves (Live) ft. Crowder

Something To Do

Read the Upper Room Discourse in one sitting, making notes of all the comfort that Jesus offers His disciples then, and now.
