Scripture:

MARK 13:32-37, MATTHEW 24:36-51, LUKE 21:34-38, MATTHEW 25:1-46

Olivet Discourse

“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes. Two men will be working together in the field; one will be taken, the other left. Two women will be grinding flour at the mill; one will be taken, the other left. So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.”
Matthew 24:36-42

My Takeaways

Something Old

“Then he will say to those on his left,  ‘Depart from me, you  cursed, into  the eternal fire prepared for  the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Matthew 25:41-46 (ESV)

Something New

  • The Olivet Discourse or Prophecy, found in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21, is so named because Jesus delivered this prophecy while He was with His disciples on the Mount of Olives. (The Mount of Olives is located to the east of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.)
  • Matthew 24:1-25:46 is the most extensive passage.
  • Eschatology: the part of theology concerned with death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul and of humankind.
  • Scripture teaches Scripture.
  • This section describes the “tribulation” period.
  • Daniel 9:24-27 helps with understanding this discourse.
  • Revelation 6:1-19:21 is another passage that helps.
  • Revelation 6 is a parallel passage that explains the “beginning of the birth pangs.”
  • Jesus says that the “gospel of the kingdom” will be preached worldwide before the end comes.
  • Jesus tells that there will be signs leading up to the day of judgment and that His Word is sure.
  • No one knows the timing of these events…be ready!
  • Four parables end the discourse.
  • Each of the parables are about being ready for Christ to return.
  • He is coming back!

Something To Do

Remember that God keeps promises….Jesus will return. Be ready!
