Scripture:

LUKE 12:35-13:21, JOHN 9:1-41

7 Signs

His neighbors and others who knew him as a blind beggar asked each other, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?” Some said he was, and others said, “No, he just looks like him!” But the beggar kept saying, “Yes, I am the same one!” They asked, “Who healed you? What happened?” He told them, “The man they call Jesus made mud and spread it over my eyes and told me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash yourself.’ So I went and washed, and now I can see!”
John 9:8-11

My Takeaways

Something Old

But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.” But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water? This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?” This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.
Luke 13:14-17

Something New

  • John wrote his gospel decades after the other three.
  • John deliberately chose seven miracles to put into his gospel.
  • John explained: John 20:30-31.
  • Each of the seven miracles contributed to John’s purpose of establishing and aiding faith.
  • 1: Water to Wine: John 2:1-11
  • 2. Healing the Official’s Son: John 4:43-54
  • 3. Healing at the Pool: John 5:1-15
  • 4. Feeding the 5000: John 6:1-15
  • 5. Walking on Water: John 6:16-21
  • 6. Healing the Blind Man: John 9
  • 7. Resurrection of Lazarus: John 11
  • The man “saw” Jesus truly and worshipped him.
  • Jesus made the point that the Pharisees could see, but they were blind to Jesus’ identity.
  • Siloam: Shiloah meant “sent”.
  • Jesus says over and over and John including, that Jesus was “sent” by God.
  • This sign fits John’s purposes.

Something To Do

Jesus sent the man on mission after he was healed. He is sending us on mission as we are healed.
