Scripture:

JOHN 6:22-71, MARK 7:1-23, MATTHEW 15:1-20

Bread of Life

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” “Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.” Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again.”
John 6:32-35a

My Takeaways

Something Old

Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.”
John 6:68-69

Something New

  • God’s Big Story: metanarrative
  • A metanarrative (also called grand narrative) is an overarching story or storyline that gives context, meaning, and purpose to all of life. A metanarrative is the “big picture” or all-encompassing theme that unites all smaller themes and individual stories.
  • Four parts of the Story: Creation, Rebellion, Redemption, Restoration
  • Seven C’s of History: Creation, Corruption (the Fall of man), Catastrophe (Noah’s Flood), Confusion (the Tower of Babel), Christ, Cross, and Consummation (the new heavens and new Earth).
  • The idea of bread as a symbol of God’s provision and life was a well-developed concept in the Old Testament.
  • Genesis: Bread first in Scripture with Abram and Melchizedek. Genesis 14:13-20
  • Exodus: Bread in the Passover. Exodus 12
  • Numbers: Bread as manna continues in the wilderness wanderings.
  • Leviticus: Bread in the Passover. Leviticus 24:5-9
  • Deuteronomy 8:3
  • Before Jesus states that He is the Bread of Life, He feeds the multitudes with bread.
  • Revelation 2:17
  • It is not about the bread, it is about Jesus.

Something To Do

Remember as I read the Word to look how it fits into God’s Big Story, and what He is trying to teach me through the themes that keep recurring.
