So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.

John 18:37-38a

• Pontius Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea from AD 26-36.
• He is mentioned outside of the four gospels by Tacitus, Philo, and Josephus.
• He is mentioned only by his connection with the trials and crucifixion of Jesus in the Bible.
• The synoptic gospels portray Pilate as reluctant to crucify Jesus.
• Luke specifically records Pilate saying that Jesus is not guilty.
• Luke 23:14, 22
• Pilate’s conscience bothered him.
• His wife sent him an urgent message. Matthew 27:19
• The gospel of John records the conversation between Pilate and Jesus about Truth.
• Pilate was presented with the evidence and chose compromise.
• In his one moment in time, Pilate makes his decision.
• Pilate ignored his conscience.
• Pilate disregarded the advice of his wife.
• Pilate chose outcry over evidence.
• Pilate couldn’t or wouldn’t see the Truth.
• What do we do with our one moment?
