Scripture:

1 CHRONICLES 29:1-22 1 KINGS 1:1-53

I Can’t Always Have My Way

About that time David’s son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, began boasting, “I will make myself king.” So, he provided himself with chariots and charioteers and recruited fifty men to run in front of him.
1 Kings 1:5

My Takeaways

Something Old

1 Chronicles 29:10-15 never gets old! Let’s hear it in the TLB. Recite this out loud to our great and glorious Lord.

While still in the presence of the whole assembly, David expressed his praises to the Lord: “O Lord God of our father Israel, praise your name for ever and ever! Yours is the mighty power and glory and victory and majesty. Everything in the heavens and earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as being in control of everything. Riches and honor come from you alone, and you are the ruler of all mankind; your hand controls power and might, and it is at your discretion that men are made great and given strength. O our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name, but who am I and who are my people that we should be permitted to give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we only give you what is yours already! For we are here for but a moment, strangers in the land as our fathers were before us; our days on earth are like a shadow, gone so soon, without a trace.

Something New

How do I respond when I don’t get my way?

Do I

  • pretend I didn’t hear God?
  • act a fool and throw a tantrum?
  • bully my way through to make what I want to happen, happen?

Many times, I hear from the Lord, and clearly understand Him concerning a situation, but don’t like what I heard. I can respond like Adonijah (Ad-no-knee-ya.)

In my mind I:

  • Believe that my solution or idea is better than the Lord’s.
  • Pretend I did not hear all the Lord wanted me to hear.
  • Raise and rally support for my plan.

Also, like Adonijah:

  • My plan doesn’t work out so well.
  • My pride makes me fall, while God’s grace gives me another chance.

Self-exaltation is spiritual dangerous.

  • For no one on earth—from east or west or even from the wilderness— should raise a defiant fist. It is God alone who judges; He decides who will rise and who will fall.
    Psalm 75:6-7
  • For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.
    Luke 18:14b ESV
  • In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
    1 Peter 5:5
  • Humble yourselves in the sight of the LORD, and He will lift you up.
    James 4:10 NJKV

Something To Do

Accept the plans of the Lord, they won’t be thwarted so I might as well, follow them with joy, a happy heart, and cheerful disposition.
