Scripture:

PROVERBS 1:1-4:27

Proverbs

These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair.
Proverbs 1:1-3

My Takeaways

Something Old

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

Something New

  • We now hop over to the Wisdom Literature section of the Old Testament.
  • Solomon is believed to have written the first 29 chapters of the 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs.
  • Proverbs is one of the most neglected books in the Bible.
  • This book is all about wisdom…how to take biblical truth and apply it to the reality of life.
  • The book shows us what life is like to live without this wisdom…it is the life of a fool.
  • Proverbs shows us that we become wise when we apply God’s principles to our decision making.
  • Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature…not a book of promises.
  • These are guidelines for life-not a list of guarantees.
  • Proverbs shows us that godliness is practical.
  • The wisdom of Proverbs is shown to us in the Incarnate Word of the New Testament. (John 1:1; Luke 24:27)
  • When we read, according to Dr. Henrietta Mears, a good practice is to put “Christ” in place of wisdom in the verse. (1 Corinthians 1:30)
  • We can then understand the true power of the Proverbs.

Something To Do

May I remember that true wisdom comes through a right relationship with Christ.
