Scripture:

JOSHUA 10:1-12:6

Conquest

These are the kings east of the Jordan River who had been killed by the Israelites and whose land was taken. Their territory extended from the Arnon Gorge to Mount Hermon and included all the land east of the Jordan Valley.
Joshua 12:1

My Takeaways

Something Old

So Joshua took control of the entire land, just as the LORD had instructed Moses. He gave it to the people of Israel as their special possession, dividing the land among the tribes. So the land finally had rest from war.
Joshua 11:23

Something New

  • The book is designed to guide the Old Testament Israelites as they faced the same challenges: pursuing the conquest, securing tribal inheritances, and renewing covenant loyalty.
  • God’s commands are direct.
  • Joshua calls the people to obedience.
  • The original audience was to take Israel’s preparations for victory to heart because God directed the events.
  • The original audience was to understand that God’s covenant with Israel established that Canaan belonged to Israel.
  • The original audience was to understand that obedience to Moses’ law would lead to victory; disobedience would lead to defeat.
  • Christ fulfilled Israel’s conquest, in the inauguration of His Kingdom.
  • Christ’s Kingdom is led by divine authority as it advances in our day.
  • Christ’s final victory is certain in the new covenant.

Something To Do

Trust in Christ’s completed work…the final victory is secure.
