Scripture:

JOSHUA 7:1, 1 CHRONICLES 2:7, JOSHUA 7:2-9:27

Stealing From God

“Get up! Command the people to purify themselves in preparation for tomorrow. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the LORD. You will never defeat your enemies until you remove these things from among you.”
Joshua 7:13

My Takeaways

Something Old

But Israel violated the instructions about the things set apart for the LORD. A man named Achan had stolen some of these dedicated things, so the LORD was very angry with the Israelites. Achan was the son of Carmi, a descendant of Zimri son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.
Joshua 7:1

I would hate a terrible sin that I committed written down for all of history to read.

Something New

What we learn about God?

  • God expects obedience.
  • God punishes disobedience.

What we learn about our theft?

  • Stealing from the Lord is not acceptable
  • Stealing from the Lord impedes defeat of my enemies.
  • Such thoughts should horrify a believer.

Notice what Joshua told them to do:

Consecration means “the separation of oneself from things that are unclean, especially anything that would contaminate one’s relationship with a perfect God.” Consecration also carries the connotation of sanctification, holiness, or purity.

If I’m not advancing in my faith, if it seems the enemy has gained ground

Ask the Holy Spirit to:

  • search my heart for sin.
  • search my heart for theft.

Questions to ask:

  • What has He asked me to give up, give away, or forsake?
  • Have I claimed glory or taken credit that belongs to God?

Something To Do

Allow the Holy Spirit to search my heart for thievery. Quicken to His findings.
