“And now, Israel, listen carefully to these decrees and regulations that I am about to teach you. Obey them so that you may live, so you may enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.”
Deuteronomy 4:1
Have I miss a place of promise because of my disobedience? What an unsettling thought!
My obedience or lack of correlates directly to the life I will experience with God.
Shâmar (shaw-mar’): to keep, guard, observe, give heed
Keep (verb with object):
- to continue in an action, course, position, state, etc.: to keep in sight; to keep going.
Obedience will
- give me life
Obey them so that you may live.
Deuteronomy 4:1 - lead me to the life God intends for me to have.
“And now, Israel, listen carefully to these decrees and regulations that I am about to teach you. Obey them so that you may live, so you may enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.” Deuteronomy 4:1 - bring God’s protection.
You saw for yourself what the Lord did to you at Baal-peor. There the Lord your God destroyed everyone who had worshiped Baal, the god of Peor. But all of you who were faithful to the Lord your God are still alive today—every one of you.Deuteronomy 4:3-4 - prepare me for the places God wants to take me.
Look, I now teach you these decrees and regulations just as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may obey them in the land you are about to enter and occupy. Deuteronomy 4:5 - make me smarter and wiser.
Obey them completely, and you will display your wisdom and intelligence among the surrounding nations. When they hear all these decrees, they will exclaim, ‘How wise and prudent are the people of this great nation!’ For what great nation has a god as near to them as the Lord our God is near to us whenever we call on him?Deuteronomy 4:6-7
New Testament and the life I want:
- “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
John 14:15 (ESV)
- Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”
John 14:23 (ESV)
The Omniscience of God in the Old Testament.“So, remember this and keep it firmly in mind: The Lord is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other.”
Deuteronomy 4:39
The life I truly long for depends on my cooperation with Holy Spirit’s work and the power of the Word.
