Scripture:

SONG 1:1-8:14

Song of Songs

This is Solomon’s song of songs, more wonderful than any other.
Song of Songs 1:1a

My Takeaways

Something Old

Your teeth are as white as sheep, recently shorn and freshly washed.Your smile is flawless, each tooth matched with its twin. Song of Songs 4:2

Something New

  • The book calls itself “The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s”, so some translations call it Song of Songs and some call it Song of Solomon.
  • While Solomon’s sin led him from the biblical ideal for marriage, it did not prevent God from using him to reveal truth.
  • Song of Songs is an example of an ancient Near East love song….closely resembling Egyptian love poems.
  • Song of Songs is often misunderstood…or skipped over completely.
  • It is a song about God’s perfect love applied to the human relationship of marriage.
  • Solomon’s song takes us on the journey to and in the marriage of a man and woman.
  • God designed marriage…and He is pleased with this telling of marriage..including the physical union.
  • This book is given to us so we can understand not only how God wants us to relate to one another in the context of marriage, but also how we can relate to Him.
  • We learn three things about love in marriage that please God: physical desire, emotional attachment, and personal devotion.
  • The main idea is that love is a powerful thing, and its fullest expression between two people is found in marriage.
  • Marriage was given to us by God to teach us about love.
  • We learn that God’s kingdom relationship with us is full of tenderness, care, and love that we see shown in Song of Songs.
  • Ephesians 5:29-31

Something To Do

May I continue to not shy away from passages in the Bible that may make me uncomfortable because of what the world has taught me. May I continue to look for the Truth that God is teaching me, and change my thoughts to be like His.
