But you say ‘Save your breath, I’m in love with these foreign gods, and I can’t stop loving them now!’
Jeremiah 2:25b
How do you start something that you now say you can’t stop? How does it even get to this point?
Why do we turn to idols?
- God isn’t moving fast enough for us.
- God has disappointed us.
- Trials and hardships.
- Not satisfied with our current situation
- The world just makes it look so good
The more disappointed in God and disillusioned with our life we become the more attractive the gods of this world will entice and seduce us
- Flesh: Want, I need, and how can I get it: supply for my needs.
- Mind:The testing of God and His authority, He really isn’t all that.
- Heart: Pride, ego, you can have all this and so much more.
“The idolater chooses a delusion and became deluded. The idolater holds it, but in reality, it holds him. He is in bondage to a lie.” – John Alexander Motyer
And, how do we turn back?
- Call on the Lord because He says:
Listen! The LORD’s arm is not too weak to save you, nor is his ear too deaf to hear you call.
Isaiah 59:1
- Believe the Lord when He says:
For I am persuaded beyond doubt (am sure) that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things impending and threatening nor things to come, nor powers, Nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39 (AMPC)
- Allow Holy Spirit to reveal what needs to be revealed
And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
John 16:8
If there was and is hope for wayward Israel, there is hope for wayward Wendy. Praise God for the hope in the cross of Christ and the certainty of our salvation.
Do the work it takes to take out all idols in my life.
