Scripture:

GENESIS 18:1-21:7

The City Gates

That evening the two angels came to the entrance of the city of Sodom. Lot was sitting there, and when he saw them, he stood up to meet them. Then he welcomed them and bowed with his face to the ground.
Genesis 19:1

My Takeaways

Something Old

Then one of them said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!”
Genesis 18:10a

Something New

Lot is Abram’s nephew.

Loft left Haran with Abram and Sarai after the death of Terah. Genesis 12:4

Lot had been a part of Abram’s household until a conflict began. Genesis 13:7

Lot showed he had issues then. Genesis 13:10

Lot decided to “pitch his tent” near Sodom. Genesis 13:12-13

Lot later got in trouble, and Abram rescued him, but at that point he was living in Sodom. Genesis 14:12

Lot is now a leader in the city of Sodom.

He is sitting at the city gates.

This is the first mention of a city gate in the Bible, but not the last!

Deuteronomy 21:18-21 Law of Moses

Ruth 4:1-11 Boaz

1 Samuel 4:18 Eli

2 Samuel 18:1-5; 19 King David

Esther 2 Plot to murder

Matthew 16:18 Gates of hell

The city gates was a place of gathering of leading men in the city discussing issues of the day, engaging in commerce, or planning.

Step by step, Lot chose to align himself with Sodom, and not God.

Something To Do

May I pay close attention to where I “pitch my tent”!
