Scripture:

GENESIS 36:1-19, 1 CHRONICLES 1:35-37, GENESIS 36:20-30, 1 CHRONCLES 1:38-42, GENESIS 36:31-43, 1 CHRONICLES 1:43-2:2

All Those Names!!!

This is the account of the descendants of Esau (also known as Edom).
Genesis 36:1

My Takeaways

Something Old

These are the names of the leaders of the clans descended from Esau, who lived in the places named for them: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, Magdiel, and Iram. These are the leaders of the clans of Edom, listed according to their settlements in the land they occupied. They all descended from Esau, the ancestor of the Edomites.
Genesis 36:40-42

Something New

  • The book of Genesis is the book of beginnings.
  • We trace the story of a man, and then his family as God’s promises are shown to be true.
  • Genesis records the information concerning those of “the promise” in greater detail.
  • As we see Esau’s family spread to Seir, which will later be Edom, it should remind us of Abram and Lot.
  • To the original audience of Genesis, this chapter would be a great reminder of God’s sovereignty as they wait for this promise of the land to come true before their eyes.
  • God fulfills His promises, even when the outcome seems to depend on other people’s decisions.

Something To Do

May I continually look for the hand of God at work in His Word…even in the chapters that seem to make no sense!
