Scripture:

GENESIS 32:1-35:27

A New Name

What is your name?” the man asked. He replied, “Jacob.” “Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him. “From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won.”
Genesis 32:27-28

My Takeaways

Something Old

Then Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming with his 400 men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and his two servant wives.
Genesis 33:1

Something New

  • Jacob is coming back home.
  • Jacob is from a lineage of faith and promise.
  • Jacob is also from a lineage of sin.
  • Jacob was named “supplanter” or “deceiver”.
  • Jacob’s turning point is wrestling with God.
  • The God of his fathers has now become his God.
  • A new name: Israel.
  • A new identity.
  • The old identity keeps pulling him back.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17
  • What identity do we walk in?

Something To Do

May I remember my new identity, and walk in that truth.
