Scripture:

LEVITICUS 20:1-22:33

No other gods.

And if the people of the community ignore those who offer their children to Molech and refuse to execute them, I myself will turn against them and their families and will cut them off from the community. This will happen to all who commit spiritual prostitution by worshiping Molech.
Leviticus 20:4-5

My Takeaways

Something Old

Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”
Genesis 22:13-14

Something New

  • Moloch/Molech name originated with the Phoenician mlk.
  • mlk: sacrifice made to affirm or acquit a vow.
  • Israelites combined the name of the pagan gods with the vowels in the Hebrew word for shame, bosheth.
  • Moloch: personified ruler of shameful sacrifice.
  • Moloch worship included child sacrifice, or “passing children through the fire.”
  • Moloch is sometimes equated to Ba’al, but the word “ba’al” is used to designate any god or ruler.
  • The Hebrew God, the God of the Bible, is different.
  • God does not want us to sacrifice our children to Him.
  • God will provide His own Son to take our place.
  • Our God is different.
  • We should be different too.

Something To Do

Make sure that the God that I follow is the God of the Bible.
