Scripture:

LEVITICUS 14:33-16:34

Yom Kippur

“Then Aaron will come out to purify the altar that stands before the Lord. He will do this by taking some of the blood from the bull and the goat and putting it on each of the horns of the altar. Then he must sprinkle the blood with his finger seven times over the altar. In this way, he will cleanse it from Israel’s defilement and make it holy.”
Leviticus 16:18-19

My Takeaways

Something Old

As the goat goes into the wilderness, it will carry all the people’s sins upon itself into a desolate land.
Leviticus 16:22

Something New

  • Yom: day
  • Kippur: to cover; reverse to atonement by vicarious, substitutionary methods.
  • The Day of Atonement was the day for the nation of Israel to be restored to God as holy people in service to the Lord.
  • The Day of Atonement served as a reminder that the daily, weekly, and monthly sacrifices made at the altar of burnt offering were not sufficient to atone for sin.
  • This one day in the year, atoning blood was brought into the Holy of Holies, the divine throne room, by the high priest as the representative of the people.
  • The Day of Atonement shows the weakness of the Law. Hebrews 10:1
  • Something was missing. Hebrews 10:4
  • The sacrifices are only a forerunner to prepare the way for a better hope. Hebrews 7:19
  • Hebrews explains the ceremonies of the Day of Atonement as a pattern of the atoning work of Christ.
  • Hebrews 9:11-14

Something To Do

May I be thankful for the atoning work of Christ.
