Scripture:

LEVITICUS 9:1-11:47

A Strange Act

Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their incense burners and sprinkled incense over them. In this way, they disobeyed the Lord by burning before him the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded.
Leviticus 10:1

My Takeaways

Something Old

Truths we can learn from the experience of Nadab and Abihu:

  • Compromise and disobedience are costly.
So fire blazed forth from the LORD’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the LORD.
    Leviticus 10:2
  • God’s standards and commands aren’t burdensome; they are light, and bring freedom.
Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.
    1 John 5:3
  • Anything except complete obedience to the Lord and His standards is interpreted as a strange act.

Questions we can ask ourselves based on the experience of Nadab and Abihu:

  • What has God commanded that I am doing differently?
  • What standard has God set that I am compromising?
  • What am I unnecessarily experiencing in life due to my choice of living compromised to God’s standards and being obedient to His commands?

Something New

I love this statement by David Guzik and Enduring Word regarding the Nabab and Abihu. They had a great legacy to pass onto their children and children’s children, to create steadfast faith in a steadfast God.

“This shows that even a legacy of great spiritual experiences can’t keep us right with God – only an abiding relationship grounded in the truth of God’s word can.” – David Guzik

Something To Do

So, what do I do? What is my call to action?

So, prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So. you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.
1 Peter 1:13-14
